Our first paper on the findings of the Tu Historia Cuenta program have been published in the Frontiers in Oncology Journal thanks to the hard work from Lizeth Tamayo. The paper reports on the demographics of the participants, health behaviors like mammography screening rates, and the prevalence of genetic testing among Latinas.
Congratulations to our very own, Dr. Xiaosong Huang! He won the award for the best poster at the UC Davis Genome Center Halloween Symposium for his work on PRS models and analysis of the PEGEN-BC data.
Congratulations are in order for our very own, Dr. Valentina Zavala Cordero! She received the award for the best presentation/talk during the UC Davis Genome Center Halloween Symposium. Her talk focused on her research for the PEGEN-BC study where she looks at the impact of indigenous ancestry on breast cancer risk.
Dr. Laura Fejerman and the Tu Historia Cuenta project were featured on ABC 10, specifically, how Latinas are less likely to seek genetic counseling and how our promotores are empowering Latinas all over California on breast cancer awareness. You can read the article and watch the video here.
Brittany Morgan, a PhD student who is a part of the Fejerman Lab, just published an amazing paper on the addition of the One Health model to research frameworks around minority health and health disparities research. You can find the paper in Epidemiology and Global Health of eLife or by clicking here.
Dr. Laura Fejerman participated in a panel discussion with The First Lady of the United States Dr. Jill Biden to discuss cancer disparities in the Latino Population at the Advancing the Science of Cancer in Latinos conference in San Antonio Texas.
The Fejerman Lab has been partnering with two community based organizations on a project called Tu Historia Cuenta, or your story counts. One of our partners, Promoters for Better Health in Los Angeles, was recently recognized by the City of Pomona, County of Los Angeles, California Assemblymember Rodriguez, and US Congressmember Correa. Promoters for Better Health was recognized for their hard work in reaching out and educating over 700 women on hereditary breast cancer and the importance of family history.
Ravinder Singh was awarded the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) for Social and Behavioral Sciences and Public Health
Our very own Dr. Valentina Zavala-Cordero has been awarded the AACR-Genentech Cancer Disparities Research Fellowship for her work in "Identification of non-European functional variants in breast cancer". Here is a short quote, "It is an honor to receive the 2021 AACR-Genentech Cancer Disparities Research Fellowship. This opportunity will allow me to advance knowledge about germline effects on tumor biology in an understudied population and will provide me with the resources to continue developing as a scientist and take my career to the next level.".
